The project included the construction of 68 kms of roads in elevations ranging from 2,400m to 1,500m above sea level. There are 32 bridges (wadi crossings or viaducts) of a total length of 4,400 m. Bridge piers are 60 m above ground level with cantilevered pier heads. Due to the precipitous nature of the ground, there are some galleries and cut-and-cover tunnels as well as considerable protective works such as over 40,000 of concrete shoulder barriers, gunite cladding of the cut slopes, rock anchors and nails, safety netting and barriers to stop falling stones.
