Protecting Our Workforce: Archirodon's Climate-Responsive Safety Measures

28 Apr 2024

On April 28, 2024, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work gives us an opportunity to address how workplace safety is evolving due to climate change. This year's theme highlights the need for organizations to adapt their practices to protect workers in a changing environment. Archirodon, as a leading international construction company, places the highest priority on the safety and well-being of its workforce. Our approach to Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) is based on an Integrated Management System that adheres to the stringent requirements of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 ensuring excellent safety records across all projects. We put emphasis on enhancing skills and knowledge - on average, our employees undergo a rigorous HSE training program, of 150,000 hours annually.

We recognize the need to implement proactive measures to address the impact of climate change across all areas of our operations, starting with our workforce, and ensuring their safety during periods of extreme weather conditions. In countries where high temperatures is a concern (like Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE), Archirodon strictly adheres to the national protocols regulating outdoor working hours to protect workers from excessive heat. Before the hot season begins, our comprehensive HSE training is expanded to raise awareness on heat stress and the risks associated with sun exposure. Specific information is provided to prevent heat-related illnesses, such as heatstroke and sunburn. We also provide essential amenities, including air-conditioned/shaded rest areas, cool drinking water stations, and appropriate protective gear, to ensure the well-being of workers.

In cold-stress prone environments, like our project sites in Kazakhstan and Northern Greece, Archirodon implements a set of safety measures to protect workers. Along with implementing a “buddy system” for enhanced support and monitoring, we optimize work schedules to alternate tasks and ensure frequent breaks and proper recovery periods. Additionally, we supply insulated clothes and equipment to protect workers from extreme cold temperatures. Recognizing the importance of nutrition in harsh conditions, we provide a proper diet that offers the necessary nutrients and caloric intake.

Archirodon understands the importance of integrating climate concerns into our Occupational, Safety and Health (OSH) practices. Striving for continuous improvement, we continually review and update our policies to address emerging challenges, such as increased exposure to hazardous substances due to changing environmental conditions. Workers actively engage in safety committees, contributing their insights to improve safety practices. By fostering a culture of learning and accountability, we empower our workforce to identify and mitigate potential hazards, promoting a safer workplace for all.

As we confront the complex challenges posed by climate change, Archirodon will continue prioritizing the safety and health of its workforce. By integrating climate considerations into our HSE practices, we strive to create a resilient workplace that can adapt to the evolving landscape.

Our presence worldwide adds value to our activities.
