Environmental sustainability

Construction projects have a substantial impact on global environmental resources. Archirodon is committed to taking proactive steps to protect, maintain and recover a healthy natural environment by implementing sustainability principles in relevant project-related processes, wherever possible.  

Considering the effect of our related activities we implement environmentally friendly policies and management practices. These policies and practices cover the complete project lifecycle from the sustainable procurement and responsible use of raw materials to the efficient consumption of natural resources and reduction of generated emissions and waste.

environmental initiatives

  • Introduction of indigenous plant species that have a higher survival rate, require less water and are more easily integrated into most of our site offices, to maintain the ecology and biodiversity of each area and the unique character of the landscape.
  • Appointment of certified Protected Species Observers (PSO) in projects located in environmentally sensitive locations to reduce impact on protected species including marine mammals, turtles and other megafauna.

Coral transplantation program in Shurayrah Bridge and Marine Jetties Project in KSA

Archirodon worked closely with The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) to relocate and transplant circa 21,000 crates of corals.

Coral transplantation activities included: Identification of coral habitats and reception area, placement of artificial coral reefs/ boulders at the reception area, coral detachment, coral transportation with plastic crates and coral re-attachment.

Translocation of fauna in Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone Project in UAE

A joint venture between Archirodon, Boskalis and Hyundai, arranged the translocation of vulnerable wildlife inhabiting the Khalifa Port marine site in Abu Dhabi by a specialist team, licensed by the Environment Agency, before the commencement of any construction activities. The purpose of this program was to capture, translocate and release terrestrial vertebrates from the Khalifa site into appropriate habitat locations within Abu Dhabi so that they couldn’t be affected. Among other species, sawscaled vipers, wonder geckos, sand geckos, gerbils, horned vipers, false cobras, etc. were relocated from the area.  

Avifauna and marine mammal observations program in Shurayrah Bridge and Marine Jetties Project and Sheybarah Dredging Project

Archirodon is working with The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) to ensure the protection of avifauna and marine megafauna around developments in The Red Sea Project Area. Observations of marine megafauna included, for example, Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphins and Ocellated Eagle Rays, while observations on land included some breeding bird species that have nested with chicks fledging such as Ospreys, White-cheeked Terns and Crab Plovers. Regular ecological surveys, modification of construction practices and exclusion zones around mangroves and coral reefs are mitigation measures aimed at protecting local wildlife and habitats. This will ensure that the natural environment is enjoyed well beyond the construction phase of planned works. 

Relocation and Planting of trees and indigenous plants in our facilities in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE

During the relocation of our facilities from Ajman to Ras Al Khaimah, the trees being planted by Archirodon in Ajman, during a period of 10 years, were completely relocated by a specialized third party to Ras Al Khaimah and replanted to the new location. In addition, additional indigenous plants for the area, with low water requirements, were planted in the new accommodation camp established nearby.

  • Implementation of recycling programs for non-hazardous and hazardous waste that include among others: paper, plastic, aluminum cans, printing cartridges, wood, steel, concrete, alkaline batteries, fluorescent bulbs, waste lubricants and lead acid batteries, wherever feasible in projects and offices.
  • Installation and use of wastewater treatment systems, to reduce the quantity of wastewater disposed of, increase the use of treated wastewater and reduce the use of freshwater supply, thus minimizing the use of natural resources in projects.
  • Introduction of a technical procedure for the recycling of concrete wastewater in our projects to minimize the disposal of wash water from concrete ready-mix trucks and batching plants in order to further reduce use of fresh water supply.

Use of a Micro Auto Gasification System for solid waste in KSA and the Middle East

A designated system was used to treat solid waste produced from RSF and CFY facilities in KSA and Middle East to reduce waste volume by up to 95% and minimize transportation and landfilling of waste, thus reducing the volume of waste disposed. The technology used offered exceptionally clean emissions for the treatment of solid waste and energy efficiency. 

Replacement of abrasive grit with garnet and reusable steel shots in selected projects and facilities in the Middle East

Abrasive grit was replaced with environmentally friendly garnet and steel grit for all our abrasive blasting activities in selected projects and facilities, to reduce the generation of hazardous waste since garnet and steel grit could be reused multiple times. In addition, toxic emissions to the environment were reduced and as a result air, land, and sea contamination from used abrasives and dust containing heavy metals was reduced as well.

  • Reduction of water consumption with water-efficient fixtures in selected offices and projects.
  • Cooperation with local suppliers in all our projects, to reduce emissions from the transportation of raw materials on site facilities.
  • Investing in new technologies for plant and equipment able to improve performance, efficiency and lower generation of emissions.

Implementation of BREEAM scheme fοr the new Archirodon Group Offices, Greece

BREEAM is an environmental performance standard that can be assessed against non-domestic refurbishment and fit-out projects to achieve a BREEAM Refurbishment and Fit-out rating.  Considering the surrounding environment and our employees’ and visitors’ wellbeing, we have worked towards the acquisition of this rating for our new offices in Athens. The BREEAM rating, through the implementation of selected sustainable options, which cover a wide range of environmental aspects such as energy, water, materials etc., will lead to savings over the life of the building and added value by producing better buildings and better conditions for building users. 

Implementation of BREEAM Infrastructure (CEEQUAL) scheme fοr the construction of Shura Permanent Bridge in KSA

BREEAM Infrastructure (CEEQUAL) is a useful scheme that improves the specification, design and construction of civil engineering projects  to integrate environmental and social issues in the design and construction process. Working closely with our client, The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC), we are currently working towards achieving the sustainability certificate of BREEAM Infrastructure (CEEQUAL), This rating will enable  the iconic Shura Permanent Bridge,  to demonstrate a commitment to sustainability best practices while enabling a performance improvement.    

  • Organizing and participating in environmental campaigns organized on multiple projects focused on the environmental sensitivities of each project.

Desert and Beach Cleaning Campaigns in numerous projects in UAE, KSA and Morocco

We believe that as we transition to a more socially and more environmentally conscious society, we have the obligation to encourage more ecologically responsible behaviors. As a result, we organize Campaigns to raise awareness among our employees on a wide range of subjects relevant to the Desert coastal and beach areas and the importance of ecological balance and conservation of Natural Resources in this fragile environment.  

Tree Planting campaigns in KSA and UAE

In an effort to enhance existing conditions in our projects by improving air quality, address  desertification and lower temperatures in adjacent areas, we have organized numerous tree planting campaigns in multiple projects.  Through multiple initiatives that  involve  indigenous and other tree species with a preference for species well suited to local climate and environment conditions.
